Discovering Who Really Owns Your At Home Business Is The Key To Your Success
Tuesday, March 25th, 2008Joseph Cousin
Every at home business owner loves the idea of owning their own business, but at some point in time it may become apparent that regardles of their name being on the door and the fact that they are accountable for every legal aspect of the at home business, they may not be the actual owner. Whether you have accepted a business offer from an online customer, bought into a franchise or even accepted investments from friends or relatives, the ownership or your at home business has may be filled with several wrinkles.
In the online business world, you have probably seen all the different offers to sign up with a company to run your own at home business. Even though your name or the name of your business will be on the website, it is still owned by the primary company. You are no more than a distributor for their products or services and have no choice but to follow their business model, selling their products at pre-set prices and earning what the company says you are going to earn.
That doesn’t necessarily mean it is a bad thing, but unfortunately many people who join these companies delude themselves into believing that they fully own their at home business. You will not be able to make any changes on the website, nor will you be able to still anything that is not from the main company and in a majority of these businesses you will not be allowed to adjust pricing. The one thing you will have control over is how much money you choose to spend on marketing this new business venture.
Franchising is an excellent way to open an at home business, whether with brick and mortar or strictly online, but it presents a similar situation for the franchise business owner. Fess will be charged to take advantage of any national advertising campaigns and you are restricted to the use of products bought from them or their authorized distributors. Again, your name will still be right up there as owning the franchise for the business, but the business itself.
Funding for a new at home business can be rather difficult, with very few choices available. If you have managed to save money over several years to fund your own start-up business and accept money from no outside sources, then you truly are the business owner. If you take money from investors, they may believe that they have a say in how the business operates because they will want to protect their investment and if you max out your credit cards to fund your new at home business, then it is owned jointly by you and the credit card companies.
A common mistake that many new at home business owners make is asking for loans from relatives to get their business up and running. While this may seem like a good idea at the time, conversation at holiday gatherings tend to go in the same direction as the business. For instance, if business is doing good and everyone is making some money from their investments then holiday meals can be a happy and fun time. Conversely, if business is not going as well as expected, turkey may not be the only thing discussed at the family Thanksgiving meal.

Your Blog As A Home Business: Making It Happen
Tuesday, March 25th, 2008Angela Booth
Blogs are mainstream now, and if you don’t already have a blog, you may be thinking of creating one. But did you know that you can create an entire home business around a blog? Many bloggers have already done so, and they’re making much more than they would make at a conventional job.
So if you’ve been hearing about the big bucks to be made in blogging, let’s look firstly at the kind of blog you could create, and then at how to get started blogging as a home business in three steps.
There are many different kinds of blogs.
You could create a blog to sell a service which you or others provide. This can be any kind of service - coaching, virtual assistance, writing, designing - any service which can be provided online.
You could create a blog to sell products and receive a commission on the sales. Many bloggers are affiliate marketers (selling on commission). They sell a wide range of goods and services from their blogs.
You could create a blog in an area in which you’re widely experienced - perhaps you’re a retired or current financial advisor, or you’re a _________ (fill in the blank with your occupation.) There are blogs run by cooks and gardeners - you can blog about any area you choose, and sell advertising on your blog to get an income.
The type of blog you choose to create depends on your own interests. Read as many blogs as you can, and sooner or later you’ll have an epiphany, thinking “I can do that!” and you’ll know the type of blog which would be perfect for you.
Once you’ve decided on the type of blog to create, it’s time to develop a business plan - this is the first of just three simple steps to turn your blog into a business.
1. Write a business plan for your blog
Don’t panic - this business plan is very simple. Just write down what you’re doing, what you need (a domain name? Hosting? Or a hosted blog?), and what funds you have to invest in your project.
You can also create some scenarios: how much your blog will earn for you in one year, three years, and five years.
One of the most important areas of your business plan is a marketing plan. Write a few sentences about how you will promote your blog - promotion is vital.
2. Follow your plan, schedule blogging into your daily life
With your business and marketing plan created, it’s time to schedule your blogging activities into your daily life.
Add your tasks to your calendar, so that you don’t forget them. The one single trait which will help you to turn your blog into a home business is consistency, both in posting to your blog, and in marketing your blog.
This leads us to our third and final step.
3. Focus on creating content, and on creating income
To turn your blog into a home business, your blog needs content. When you’re just starting out, you won’t have much content, so creating content is your first priority.
With some content created, you can start marketing your blog, so that you attract readers.
Within a short time - around three months on average - your blog will begin earning an income. Over time, that income will grow, and before you know it, you can ditch your day job and focus on your blog as your home business.

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008Retirement Planning For Dummies: What You Forgot To Include In Your Retirement Plans
Tuesday, March 25th, 2008Dr. Cynthia Barnett
Everyone knows that the best way to plan for your retirement is to make sure you have a 401K plan or something similar, so you can save enough money to live on in your golden years. Or is it? If you’ve only planned for your financial security, you have missed a huge and important step in your retirement planning.
Consider this: the average retirement age for Americans is 57.5, and life expectancy is 85 or older. This means the average retirement lasts 30 years or more. Sitting around and doing nothing might be relaxing for a while, but do you really want to spend 30 years gathering dust?
The most important thing you can do for your retirement planning doesn’t involve the financial aspect. Of course you need to make sure you’ll have enough money set aside to maintain your lifestyle, but beyond that, you have to fulfill your non-material needs. How are you going to spend your time? How will you remain satisfied and purpose-driven? The answers to these questions are the aspects too many people neglect to include in their retirement planning.
Your first step should be to determine these answers. There are a number of ways you can do this. Here are some tips on discovering what you really want out of your golden years and planning for more than just financial security:
* List everything that you have always wanted to do, but had to put on a back burner because you didn’t have the time. Is there a place you long to visit? A hobby you’ve wanted to pick up? An organization you’ve been thinking about joining?
* Don’t rule anything out because you think you’ll be “too old” for it. They say you’re only as old as you feel – and if you need proof, just look at how many people in their sixties and even seventies are sky diving, bungee jumping, and rock climbing!
* Consider working when you retire. It’s not as bizarre as it sounds – perhaps there is a place you’ve always wanted to work, but couldn’t make a career out of it because it didn’t pay enough. Retirement is the time to try it out and see what you’ve been missing.
* Think of your retirement as a beginning, rather than an ending. Once you leave the “real” workforce, you can start a whole new life of realizing your dreams.
When you decide on the non-financial course of your retirement, it’s a good idea to keep track of your vision. You may want to start a retirement journal and write down your goals. There are many things you can do now to have everything in place for your re-fired life! Find out what it’s going to take to accomplish your goals, and put down as much of the groundwork as possible between now and retirement time.
Also, keep in mind that it’s never too early -–or too late-– to start laying the foundation for your retirement planning. Once you’ve determined your vision for an ideal retirement that includes the realization of your dreams, you can start taking steps to achieve that vision no matter where you are in life.
